PAWSOX TIE FRANCHISE MARK WITH WIN #83
August 27, 2008

(Allentown, PA) - The Pawtucket Red Sox opened up their offense again on Wednesday night in Allentown, knocking out a season-high 19 base hits, routing Lehigh Valley 14-4. The PawSox (83-56) tied the franchise record for most wins in a season. That mark was set in 2003. The Sox are now a franchise record, 27 games over the .500 plateau. There are 4 regular season games remaining on the 2008 schedule, all at McCoy. Lehigh Valley again proved to be no match for the PawSox. The Iron Pigs have lost 13 of the 14 meetings between the 2 clubs this season. Pawtucket finished a perfect 8-0 at Coca Cola Park. Lincoln Holdzkom (6-5) earned the win with 4 shutout innings of relief. For the second straight night, Gil Velazquez (10) and Jonathan Van Every (26) hit back to back home runs. Velazquez became the seventh PawSox hitter to reach double figures in home runs (Van Every, Bailey (25), Carter (24), Kottaras (22), Brown (12), Thurston (10). Jason Lane has 18, but hit 16 while with Scranton). The PawSox will enjoy a day off on Thursday before the final four game homestand begins on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Charlie Zink (14-5) faces Aaron Laffey (6-2).

JEFF BAILEY AND CHARLIE ZINK NAMED IL MVP'S
August 27, 2008

(Pawtucket, RI) - The Pawtucket Red Sox, who have already clinched a playoff spot in the upcoming International League Governors’ Cup Playoffs, received some more good news today with the announcement of the postseason IL All-Star team and year-end award winners. For the first time in franchise-history (and the first time in 13 years in the league) teammates have earned IL MVP honors (PawSox 1B/OF Jeff Bailey) and IL Most Valuable Pitcher honors (PawSox RHP Charlie Zink). The PawSox also placed four players on the year-end IL All-Star team (matching their club-record from the 1979 season and the most in the league since 2002) as Charlie Zink is the starting pitcher, Jeff Bailey and teammate Chris Carter are outfielders on the squad, and Joe Thurston is the IL All-Star second baseman.

The IL postseason All-Star Team and Award Winners are selected by the league’s managers, coaches, media, and club representatives.

Jeff Bailey becomes the first PawSox MVP in 22 years since 1B Pat Dodson won the IL MVP in 1986. Other PawSox MVPs include: Jim Rice in 1974, Ted Cox in 1977, Gary Allenson in 1978, and Dave Stapleton in 1979. Charlie Zink becomes the first PawSox to earn Most Valuable Pitcher honors since Bronson Arroyo in 2003. Other PawSox Most Valuable Pitchers include: Dick Pole in 1973, Bob Ojeda in 1981, Aaron Sele in 1993, and Brian Rose in 1997. The last teammates to cop both MVP and Most Valuable Pitcher awards in the same season were OF Butch Huskey and RHP Jason Isringhausen of Norfolk in 1995. Prior to this season the last PawSox All-Star was INF Dustin Pedroia in 2006. This year’s crop of four PawSox All-Stars matches the most Pawtucket has ever placed on the team – in 1979 the PawSox also had four All-Stars including: SS Glenn Hoffman, 3B Dave Stapleton, OF Sam Bowen, and DH Dave Koza.
